It's Time to Make Period Care Available in the Workplace

Why It's Time to Make Period Care Standard in Every Workplace

Imagine this: you're at work, the day is in full swing, and suddenly — your period arrives. You rummage through your bag. Nothing. No tampons, no pads. You duck into the bathroom, but there’s nothing there either. You whisper to a colleague. They’re out too. What now?

For half the population, this is not a rare inconvenience — it’s a monthly reality. And for some, it’s even more difficult due to affordability, stigma, or a lack of access altogether.

So why, in 2025, is period care still treated as optional in the workplace?

Periods Happen. So Let’s Plan for Them.

We provide tea bags, tissues, toilet paper, and soap as standard — no one would question their place in a shared space. But period care? That still feels like a “personal responsibility.”

But here’s the thing: periods are normal. They’re not private, shameful, or a surprise. They're part of everyday life, and they deserve to be treated that way at work.

When period products are provided in staff bathrooms or wellness spaces, it sends a simple but powerful message:
🩸 You belong here. We’ve thought of you. We care.

The Case for Period Equity at Work

Providing tampons or pads in the workplace isn’t just about comfort — it’s about equity and inclusion. Here's why it matters:

  • 1 in 12 people in Aotearoa can’t afford period products — meaning they may miss work or use unsafe alternatives.
  • 1 in 3 women under 25 in Aotearoa have struggled to afford period products at some point. (Source: Youth19 Survey – NZ)
  • 80% of women experience symptoms during menstruation that impact concentration, comfort, and productivity at work. (Source: BMC Women’s Health)
  • People caught unprepared are often forced to leave early, miss meetings, or feel embarrassed asking around.
  • Gender-diverse and non-binary staff may feel especially unsupported in environments that don’t acknowledge menstruation at all.

Small things create big impact. Period products aren’t a luxury — they’re a basic need.

Workplaces Have the Power to Lead

Whether you’re part of a large organisation or a close-knit team, providing period care in your workplace is one of the simplest, most meaningful ways to support staff wellbeing and inclusion.

Start with a shelf in the bathroom. A drawer in reception. A quiet, thoughtful commitment to doing better.
