What Your Period Is Telling You About Your Body
Your Period Is Feedback — Not a Problem
We’re often taught to see periods as something to endure, suppress, or ignore. But your menstrual cycle is actually one of your body’s most powerful communication tools.
Pain, flow, timing, digestion, and energy levels all offer clues about what’s happening hormonally and system-wide. While no single symptom tells the full story, patterns over time can be incredibly informative.
Let’s break down what some common period signs may be telling you.
Period Pain & Cramps
What it can signal: Low magnesium
Magnesium plays a key role in muscle relaxation and nervous system regulation. When levels are low, uterine muscles may contract more intensely, leading to stronger cramps.
Many women are mildly deficient in magnesium due to stress, modern diets, and depleted soils — which can make period pain feel more intense month after month.

Brown Spotting
What it can signal: Low progesterone
Brown blood is typically older blood leaving the uterus more slowly. If this shows up regularly before or after your period, it may suggest progesterone levels aren’t rising or falling as smoothly as they should.
Progesterone is essential for cycle balance, mood stability, and proper uterine lining shedding.
Heavy Flow with Clots
What it can signal: Higher oestrogen
Oestrogen stimulates growth of the uterine lining. When oestrogen is higher relative to progesterone, the lining can become thicker — resulting in heavier bleeding and clots when it sheds.
This doesn’t mean oestrogen is “bad,” but balance matters.
Period Poops
What it can signal: Excess prostaglandins
Prostaglandins help the uterus contract to release your period. But they don’t stay local — they also affect nearby smooth muscle, including the bowel.
Higher levels can lead to looser stools, urgency, or cramping during your period.
Bloating
What it can signal: Digestive stress
Hormonal shifts can slow digestion and increase water retention, especially if the gut is already under strain.
Bloating around your period can be influenced by inflammation, food sensitivities, stress, or changes in gut motility.
Weakness & Headaches
What it can signal: Dehydration
Blood loss, fluid shifts, and reduced electrolyte balance can all contribute to headaches, fatigue, and light-headedness during your period — especially if hydration is low.
Even mild dehydration can feel amplified during menstruation.
Light & Short Periods
What it can signal: Low oestrogen or reduced blood flow
Very light or short periods can sometimes indicate lower oestrogen levels or reduced circulation to the uterus.
This may occur during high stress, under-fueling, postpartum changes, or major life transitions.
A Gentle Reminder
These signs are not diagnoses — they’re conversation starters with your body.
Your cycle changes with stress, sleep, nutrition, life stage, and season of life. What matters most is noticing patterns and responding with care, not judgment.
Supporting your cycle starts with:
-
Listening to your body
-
Reducing unnecessary chemical exposure
-
Choosing products that are gentle, breathable, and hormone-respectful
Your period is information.
When you listen, your body tends to respond 🤍
